In recent months, Southeast Asia has witnessed a surge in protests and public outcry over the detention of activists and dissidents across several countries, highlighting a growing crackdown on civil liberties and freedom of expression.

Cambodia: In Cambodia, six activists affiliated with the dissolved opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party were deported from Thailand to face treason charges for critical Facebook comments about their government. Human rights groups fear they may face inhumane treatment in Cambodian prisons. Additionally, a Cambodian maid working in Malaysia, Nuon Toeun, was deported back to Cambodia for social media posts criticizing Cambodian leaders. She now faces charges of incitement, with potential imprisonment of up to five years. 

Vietnam: Vietnam has also intensified its suppression of dissent. Prominent activist Nguyen Chi Tuyen was sentenced to five years in prison for anti-state activities. Similarly, environmental defender Hoàng Thị Minh Hồng was imprisoned for tax evasion, a charge critics argue was politically motivated. hts organizations calling for the immediate release of detained activists and urging governments to uphold freedom of expression and assembly.
